Hiawassee Sketches

Explore the fascinating history of Hiawassee's attempt to create a themed town in the 1970s, based on popular mountain-heritage designs over the years, with inspiration drawn from the town's known nickname, "Little Switzerland," and its popular western influence. Inspired by the success of "Little Germany" in nearby Helen, local residents envisioned a vibrant downtown filled with unique buildings and businesses. While the momentum eventually faded, these sketches offer a glimpse into the past, showcasing the designs of the buildings that embraced the theme. Discover what Hiawassee might have looked like and the businesses that once thrived in this charming community.
